Pendant Citrine

October 26, 2008

A pendant, from Old French, is defined as an adornment that hangs from a piece of jewelry, particularly a necklace or an earring.

Citrine is a member of the Quartz family. Citrine is a yellow gemstone with a beautiful color that can range from light to dark. Citrine comes from the French word for lemon. Citrine is sometimes misnamed “topaz-quartz.”

Citrine is the November birthstone.

A Pendant Citrine, therefore, is a yellow gemstone quartz adornment that hangs from a necklace or an earring.

Citrine – rarely found naturally – contains ferric impurities. Most commonly found commercial citrine is, in fact, artificial, being composed of heated amethyst, or, in come cases, heated smoky quartz. Naturally occurring citrine has a pale yellow appearance, while these artificially heated gems are more orange or reddish in appearance. Today, the most popular pendant citrine gems are primarily vivid yellow or orange in color.

Indeed, most pendant citrine gems available today are, in fact, burnt amethysts or smoky quartz. Only someone trained in the art of gemstones can truly recognize the signs of heat treatment, with burnt stones having more subtle stripes as the yellow of natural ones is distinguished by its cloudy appearance.

The leading producer of citrine is the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (citrine was once known as “Brazilian topaz”). However, the origins of citrine are rooted in Spain, Arran (a Scottish island), the countries of France and Hungary, and in several additional secluded mines spread throughout the world.

Another note of interest – yellow topaz and citrine are nearly impossible to distinguish to the naked eye.

Other common names for citrine include golden topaz, Spanish topaz, or Madeira topaz. However, other than color, Citrine has very little in common with the gemstone topaz – except, perhaps, for a few nuances of color in appearance.

Citrine gems are generally measured in millimeters, rather than carats (as is more common with precious jewels, such as diamonds). A one-carat citrine would measure approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. Prices can range dramatically, from $40 to around $100. The more expensive citrine gems are known as natural citrines; they occur naturally and thus have no artifical heating.

But pendate citrine can mean so much more than a simple gem.

According to legend, if you are feeling out of balance emotionally, citrine is the perfect solution, giving you a cheerful and happy disposition. Citrine can also act as a physical balancer, once being used as a powerful medicinal stone. Citrine – and, indeed, Pendant Citrine – casts a bright shimmer and brings a ray of glorious sunshine to those cold, dark November days.

In the realm of mysticism, citrine is said to dispel sadness, anger, and fear. Citrine, as some claim, will warn its wearer of poisons and offers protection from suddenly, unexpected death. Can it really make men intelligent and handsome, while making sterile women fertile and happy? The legends of citrine’s power are greatly exaggerated in some circles!

A pendant citrine may be exactly what is needed for anyone needing a little more joy in their day; especially if they were born in the month of November.
